Arvind Kejriwal: Allegations of corruption lead to the chief minister of Delhi’s detention

Chief Minister of Delhi and well-known opposition leader Arvind Kejriwal was taken into custody by India’s financial crime bureau, according to a statement from his party.

The arrest is related to claims of corruption concerning the city’s alcohol sales regulations.

Mr. Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which he leads, assert that the lawsuit has political motivations and deny any misconduct.

His arrest occurs a few weeks before India’s general election is scheduled to start.

On Thursday, as officials of the Enforcement Directorate agency searched Mr. Kejriwal’s house, police ringed the residence.

The issue concerns claims that the Delhi government’s 2022 alcohol selling policy, which eliminated the government monopoly, offered private sellers unfair benefits.

In this matter, Mr. Kejriwal has disregarded many summonses.

In an attempt to obtain Mr. Kejriwal’s release, the AAP has charged the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in “dirty politics” and has announced that it will want an early Supreme Court hearing.

The general election in India will be held in seven phases in April and May, with the results declared on June 4.

Opposition parties have said that the BJP government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is abusing government agencies for political purposes ahead of the election.

According to AAP legislator and chief whip in the Delhi assembly Dilip Pandey, Mr. Modi “is scared of Kejriwal” as seen by his incarceration, he told the BBC.

“Kejriwal’s ideas cannot be arrested. Mr. Pandey declared, “We will keep fighting against Mr. Modi’s government’s unfair policies and his arrest.

In the same case, two other AAP leaders, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, were taken into custody last year.
They are among a number of well-known opposition figures who are the focus of what many claim are politically motivated criminal investigations.

Following a complaint by a member of the BJP, Rahul Gandhi, the most well-known opposition Congressman, was found guilty of criminal libel last year.

He was barred from the parliament for a while after receiving a two-year prison sentence, but this has sparked questions about the health of India’s democracy. Eventually, a higher court stayed the ruling.
