In a recent interview, President Mohamed Irfaan Ali of Guyana called out the “hypocrisy” of the industrialized world. This comment quickly went viral. In the now-viral video clip, veteran lawmaker Stephen Sackur of the BBC asked him concerns concerning oil exploitation and climate change. Over the next years, the South American country is anticipated to collect natural gas and oil off its coast valued at about $150 billion.

“Did you realize that the forest in Guyana spans the combined areas of England and Scotland? We have managed to preserve a forest that holds 19.5 gigatons of carbon. Does it mean you have the right to give us a climate change lecture? We have managed to save this forest, so allow me to give you a lesson on climate change. The 19.5 gigatons of carbon in the store that the people of Guyana have managed to survive on, that you and the rest of the world enjoy, that you do not pay us for, and that you do not value,” Ali shot back.
