What is Xiaomi’s idea for connecting homes, autos, and phones called HyperOS ?

Originally starting out as a small custom ROM project in 2010, Xiaomi has grown into a multinational company with operations in more than 100 nations. The company’s low-cost smartphones initially drove its success. The business believed that it could enter new markets with a substantial infusion of cash. Presently, the Xiaomi SU7 EV, Xiaomi air purifiers, and Xiaomi earphones.

One may argue that Xiaomi’s product “ecosystem” is larger than even Apple’s. Xiaomi’s software has to advance to keep up with the rapid expansion of its hardware and enable these devices to work together. Here’s when HyperOS becomes useful.

How does HyperOS work?

The company referred to HyperOS as a “Human x Car x Home” smart ecosystem, or “a system with humans at the centre,” at its Xiaomi 14 launch event at MWC Barcelona. That provides some understanding of the OS’s purpose but not much more.

Basically, HyperOS is a catch-all word for all of Xiaomi’s operating systems used throughout its ecosystem. This includes cellphones, smart household appliances, and, in the near future, automobiles. Consequently, some of its most recent devices—such as the Watch S3 and the Xiaomi 14 series—come pre-installed with HyperOS. Xiaomi claims that the HyperConnect framework is integrated across all devices, and it plans to use this framework to connect these gadgets.

Nevertheless, HyperOS is not a single operating system, despite being marketed as such. Despite using a similar architecture, Apple, a company renowned for its connected ecosystem, does not employ a single operating system across all of its products.

Based on the open-source RTOS/NuttX, HyperOS uses the open-source Xiaomi Vela platform for Internet of Things goods. HyperOS is based on AOSP for tablets and smartphones. With the exception of a few UI tweaks and the addition of generative AI features, HyperOS and MIUI are identical since both platforms utilized AOSP.

What distinguishes HyperOS from MIUI?

Xiaomi highlights improvements including a thorough reorganization of technical aspects including the file system, memory management, and network system in its press statement for HyperOS. However, it doesn’t get into the technical specifics of how the update varies from MIUI beyond these small improvements.

In our evaluation of HyperOS, we pointed out how the new animations, icons, and UI adjustments improve smoothness. Apart than this, though, there isn’t much of a difference between it and MIUI. At least the mobile operating system has undergone more of a rebranding than a thorough redesign.

Which HyperOS for mobile features have seen the most advancements?

Perhaps Xiaomi’s optimization of the OS storage, which reduces the space occupied by MIUI 14 from 12.53GB to just 9.14GB, is partially responsible for the improved fluidity.

You’ll notice improved animations throughout the operating system as part of this update. Additionally, a number of UI elements have been adjusted to appear livelier and more colourful than they were. However, several components, such as the Control Centre, have also begun to resemble iOS, which Xiaomi has been copying for some time.

A few more programs, like the File Manager, Calculator, and Weather apps, were also overhauled. The Weather app now includes more information like Real Feel and is easier to understand.

How about AI that is generative?

Xiaomi HyperMind, referred to as the “central nexus of HyperOS,” is the company’s answer to Samsung’s Galaxy AI. But the business wants to take it a step farther. One of the instances of HyperMind’s integration at the MWC keynote was its ability to automatically set different brightness settings for different times of day in Xiaomi’s smart lighting devices.

Three primary generative AI functions are available on smartphones:

Artificial Intelligence Subtitles: This feature can produce real-time voice translation, meeting subtitles with summaries, and video subtitles and translation. The company hasn’t said which apps are supported, though.
With the AI Portrait function, you may upload a database of already-taken pictures of you and other people. After that, you can provide a prompt to create multiple pictures of that individual.
AI Expansion: This function functions similarly to Photoshop’s Generative Expand functionality. Photos can be enlarged beyond their original dimensions. According to Xiaomi, on-device calculation is used for this.

In summary
HyperOS is currently more of a concept that Xiaomi is developing. It’s evident from the keynote that the firm wants artificial intelligence to help all of its gadgets communicate intelligently with one another and make wise judgments. However, as Xiaomi stated in the speech, “smarter things are to come,” and it appears like the firm is still working on the operating system.
