The Act, as Amit Shah pointed out, is meant to confer citizenship, not ‘take away anyone’s citizenship.‘

Before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) would be put into effect, according to Union Home Minister Amit Shah‘s statement on Saturday. The CAA, which was signed into law in December 2019, seeks to grant citizenship to refugees who have been persecuted in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. It specifically aims to change the Citizenship Act of 1955 to allow illegal migrants who are Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian to become eligible for Indian citizenship.

The Act, Shah said, is meant to confer citizenship, not “take away anyone’s citizenship.”

“CAA is a national act…It will get notice before to the polls. There ought to be no room for doubt about that. Our nation’s minorities, particularly the Muslim minority, are being incited…Since the Act makes no mention of citizenship, CAA cannot take away someone’s citizenship. Speaking at the ET Now-Global Business event in Delhi, Shah stated that the CAA is a statute that grants citizenship to refugees who were oppressed in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Shah also claimed that the previous Congress administration had “reneged” on its promise to bring the CAA into effect nationwide.

“CAA was a government promise made to Congress.” Congress promised the refugees that they would be welcomed in India and would be granted Indian citizenship at the time when the country was divided and minorities were being persecuted in foreign countries. They’re turning back now, according to Shah, as reported by ANI.

Protests around the nation have been widely organized in response to the controversial implementation of the CAA. However, Amit Shah has clarified that no one’s citizenship may be revoked by the CAA because the Act has no such clause. He has also underlined that the CAA is not meant to take away anyone’s Indian citizenship; rather, it is meant to award citizenship to those who have endured persecution in their own countries.

Amit Shah has voiced optimism for the BJP and NDA’s chances in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, projecting a sizable win and a third term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s direction.

Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supports family planning but does not support political groups like the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), led by Jayant Choudhary, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) joining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

In response to a direct query on the SAD, Shah stated that although discussions are continuing, nothing has been decided. He made it clear that the 2024 elections will be a battle between development and those who would just make empty promises, rather than between the NDA and the opposition INDIA alliance.

In reference to Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, Shah argued that Gandhi lacks the authority to conduct the march because his party was in charge of the nation’s 1947 division.

Speaking of the Ram temple at Ayodhya, Shah said that for 500–550 years, the nation’s residents have held the view that the temple had to be built where they believed Lord Ram to have been born.
