Lionel Messi chips the ball

During Inter Miami’s MLS opening victory over Real Salt Lake, Lionel Messi used incredible dribbling ability to get past an injured man.

In the MLS season opening for Inter Miami on Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale, it was all about Lionel Messi. The Argentine maestro guided Inter Miami to a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake. Miami had a 1-0 advantage at the break thanks to a goal by Robert Taylor. Then, late in the second half, Diego Gomez scored with help from Luis Suarez to give Miami a 2-0 victory.

Goalie Zac MacMath, who finished the game with six saves, thwarted Messi when he had the chance to make it 3-0 in the 89th minute.

Social media users have taken to the 2022 World Cup winner’s highlight video from the game. The first-half play that has drawn the most attention has caused supporters to lose their minds.

Messi was given the ball close to the opposing area in the 44th minute by Real Salt Lake thanks to a defensive and goalkeeping blunder. The former Barcelona player easily dribbled by a player, sliding to his left, before coming up against a ground-based wounded player. Messi entered genius mode and attempted a powerful shot that was denied by a defender after merely chipping the ball over the wounded player.

In the 39th minute, Messi found Taylor with a through pass, and Taylor scored with his right foot as he raced onto the right side of the penalty box. MacMath turned to his right, only to feel the timid gunshot squirm beneath his thigh.

In the eighty-third minute, Messi found Suarez, who provided a fast cross that Gomez easily converted for the second goal.

Suarez, who recently joined Miami, stated in a statement following the game, “I knew I was going to face tough competition (in MLS).” Furthermore, we understood that Inter Miami, one of the favorites to win, would always play against a strong opponent.”

Suarez joins former Barcelona teammates Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba in a side, which underperformed last season. Inter Miami were also poor in the pre-season and will be hoping to build on their opening MLS season win.
